There is plenty of literature out there that discusses the types of foods older adults should eat. However, there isn’t a lot of content available that explains the foods that seniors should make an effort to avoid. Hot dogs, ham, sausage, and lunch meats are all examples of processed meats that older adults should refrain from eating. They are loaded with sodium and can increase a senior’s blood pressure. Creamy Salad Dressing
Topping a nutritious salad with a creamy salad dressing can make it far less healthy. While ranch, blue cheese, and thousand island are all popular salad dressings, they are full of calories, saturated fat, and sodium. Since they may lead to unhealthy weight gain and heart conditions, seniors should opt for lighter salad dressings.
Butter and Margarine
It’s true. Everything tastes better with butter. However, butter and margarine are packed with calories and saturated fat. Canned soups are convenient but loaded with sodium. It’s wise to purchase low-sodium soups or prepare homemade ones where the sodium can be controlled.
Although processed snacks like potato chips and pretzels are tasty, they are usually filled with calories, sodium, and fat. The good news is there are a variety of other snack options that older adults can enjoy without the guilt. Some examples include fresh fruit, hummus and carrots, and berries and Greek yogurt.
Processed meats, creamy salad dressing, butter and margarine, canned soups, and processed snacks should all be avoided by older adults who would like to keep their weight and health in check.
