Senior in Home Care Services Advice: How Seniors Can Stay Safe During Daily Walks

Jan 4, 2018 by Jennifer Cason

Most seniors understand the importance of regular exercise and choose to commit to daily walks outdoors as a result. Daily walks can boost their mood, improve their strength and flexibility, and help them maintain a healthy weight. If your older loved one takes daily walks or is interested in doing so, it’s a good idea to educate them on these safety tips by senior in home care services providers.

Check the Weather

Prior to going on a walk, older adults should check the weather. By checking the weather, they will know how to dress and can avoid unexpected rain, thunderstorms, or snow. Senior in home care services professionals note that on occasion the weather may prevent a senior from walking outside. When this occurs, they can walk around a shopping mall, on an indoor track, or on a treadmill.

Wear Comfortable Shoes

Older adults should invest in a pair of comfortable walking shoes. Wearing uncomfortable shoes on a walk can lead to blisters and increase their risk of tripping or falling during a walk.

Don’t Forget Sunscreen

Even on cloudy days, senior citizens should apply sunscreen before going on their walk. Sunscreen will protect their skin from burning while keeping their complexion more supple and attractive. Seniors should opt for a sunscreen that is intended for sensitive or aging skin.

Take a Phone

In the event that a senior gets lost or falls, their phone can help them receive the assistance they need. Senior in home care services aides suggest that seniors wear clothing that contains pockets so that they can keep their phone in one during their walk.

Bring Water

It’s imperative that older adults bring a bottle of water with them on their walks. Water will keep them hydrated and reduce their risk of developing heat stroke or other serious condition on warmer days.

Seniors who take daily walks should always check the weather beforehand, wear sunscreen and comfortable shoes, and bring their phone and water bottle.
