In Home Caregiver Advice: Tips for Seniors with Psoriasis

Oct 26, 2017 by Jennifer Cason

Psoriasis is a skin condition that causes red and scaly skin patches. It affects millions of seniors each year and is typically seen on the knees, elbows, scalp, and lower back. If your senior loved one has been diagnosed with psoriasis, there are numerous ways they can ease their discomfort. An in home caregiver can share the following tips:

Avoid Scented Products

Although scented products are nice, they can worsen a senior’s itchy skin. Therefore, older adults with psoriasis should avoid scented products like cleansers, detergents, and fabric softeners. An in home caregiver can help your senior find products that contain “hypoallergenic” or “fragrance-free” labels.

Moisturize Often

While moisturizing is important for all senior citizens, it is especially vital for older adults with psoriasis. Thicker moisturizers should be applied after a senior has dried off from their shower or bath so the cream can trap moisture in the skin before it can evaporate. Older adults should consult their doctor about prescription creams.

Wash Skin Gently

Older adults who are living with psoriasis should be very gentle when washing their skin and avoid scrubbing at all costs. An in home caregiver can assist your senior in finding a fragrance-free soap or body wash that is designed to add moisture to the skin rather than dry it out. They can also encourage them to keep baths and showers short so they are less likely to dry out their skin.

Eat Healthy

Believe it or not, a senior’s diet can affect their psoriasis. By refraining from red meat and snacks that are full of trans-fat, older adults can reduce their risk of psoriasis flare-ups. Seeds, nuts, salmon, and other foods full of omega-3 fatty acids can reduce inflammation and help your senior manage their psoriasis.

Senior citizens living in Brentwood, TN who are living with psoriasis should avoid scented products, always moisturize their skin, wash their skin gently rather than scrubbing it, and stick to a healthy diet.
