Caregiver Advice: Healthy and Original Breakfast Ideas for Seniors

Aug 3, 2017 by Jennifer Cason

Breakfast truly is the most important meal of the day. Older adults who eat breakfast each and every morning kick start their metabolism and burn calories throughout the day. They also receive the energy they need to live healthy and productive lives. If your senior loved one is in search of some healthy and original breakfast ideas, here are several that a caregiver can recommend to their senior clients:

Egg Quesadilla

Older adults who love Mexican food should consider trying an egg quesadilla for breakfast. To prepare it, seniors should scramble a whole egg and egg white. Next, they should sauté a bit of chopped green pepper as well as chopped red onion. Lastly, the scrambled eggs and veggies should be added into a whole-wheat tortilla and topped with Mexican style shredded cheese and a bit of chunky salsa.

English Muffin with Berries

Your caregiver may suggest an English muffin with berries to senior citizens because this breakfast is loaded with fiber and will help them eat fewer calories during lunch and dinner. After spreading natural peanut butter on a whole grain English muffin, seniors should add some chia seeds, cinnamon, and their choice of strawberries, blueberries, or both.

Rice Pudding with Pistachios

Pistachios are promoted by a caregiver because they contain more potassium and vitamin K and fewer calories than other nuts. Seniors who would like to add some pistachios into their breakfast can prepare a delicious pistachio rice pudding. To prepare it, they should cook some instant brown rice in skim milk. Then, mix in about a dozen pistachios and add a bit of brown sugar and cinnamon on top.

Seniors in Brentwood, TN who would like to please their taste buds while still adhering to a healthy diet during breakfast should try an egg quesadilla, English muffin with berries, or pistachio rice pudding.
